MRL Teams

Age Groups: Age groups are designated by birth year with combined age groups. For example, u11 & u12 players (birth years 2010 and 2011) play together in the u12 age group.
Spring 2022 age groups are the same as fall 2021 age groups.
  • u10 (birth years 2012-2013)
  • u12 (birth years 2010-2011)
  • u15 (birth years 2007-2009)
  • u19/High School (birth years 2003-2007)

Developmental Stage - 9 to 12 Years
Players develop a deeper understanding of the rules, and are encouraged to explore the gray areas of the rules. This does not mean encouraging the players to “cheat,” but figuring out how to gain advantages within the games (i.e. taking free kicks quickly, figuring out how much physical play the referee will allow).
Objectives:
  • Acquisition of basic skills
  • Introduction of key concepts
  • Players begin to transition from being self-centered to being self-critical and develop the need for group or team games
  • The game itself is central to all skills training

Intermediate Stage - 13 to 15 Years
First two years playing 11v11. The fundamental area of focus here is developing tactical concepts of the game while continuing to develop technical abilities. Players should know the rules of the game, and should be encouraged to understand the "grey area" of the rules, the etiquette of the game, and the gamesmanship of the game. This is usually accomplished by watching the game being played at very high levels, both in person and on television.

Players will continue to work on the development of fundamental and advanced individual skills. They will also receive more in-depth tactical instructions, particularly around understanding and playing different positions. Players will continue to experience different positions on the field but may begin to settle into a primary position.  as they receive more in-depth tactical guidance and learn different systems of play.
